SWINE FLU. Be aware. Be responsible.
What you need to know and what you need to do
The Swine Flu Pandemic has been sweeping across the world and is now spreading in India too. The most difficult part of dealing with Swine Flu is that it is very difficult to tell its symptoms at an early stage. With the seasonal flu also spreading at the same time it is very hard to differentiate between the two and all the myths floating around don't help. So here are the right answers to all your H1N1 related questions, the symptoms you should be looking out for and tips on how to keep yourself and your family safe from it.
Human swine flu H1N1 is called 'swine flu' because it is similar to the flu that infects pigs. The Influenza virus A (H1N1) symptoms appear to be similar to those produced by your seasonal flu. H1N1 influenza spreads in the same way that other flu viruses do. As with other flu viruses, people who have the virus can be contagious a day or so before their symptoms start, so they can pass it on before they even know they're sick. It can cause death in some cases due to respiratory complications.
H1N1 virus spreads in the same way that seasonal flu spreads, mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people who are carrying it. People may also become infected by touching a surface or an object with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
The symptoms of H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Most people will have at least 2 of the mentioned symptoms. A lot of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Several cases of death have been reported as a result of severe illness associated with this virus.
Emergency warning signs in children that need urgent medical attention:

Emergency warning signs in adults that need urgent medical attention:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Take these everyday steps to protect your health
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with flu-like illness stay at home for at least 24 hours after your fever is completely gone except to visit hospital. Keep away from others as much as possible.
Try to avoid spending time in crowded place as much as possible.
maintain proper air circulation in your house all the time.
lead a healthy lifestyle by getting adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping yourself physically active.
Wearing a face mask in public places or when near a sick person can help to some extent. However the masks must be washed/disposed at regular intervals.
With the right knowledge, some simple precautions and just a little common sense you can reduce the chances of swine flu affecting you and your family. However in the unfortunate event of swine flu infection head immediately to one of the Government approved hospitals listed here:
